I have 20 years experience as a mainstream Primary School Principal, where I have worked in a variety of school settings from rural, urban, affluent and areas of high needs, Maori and Non Maori environments.
Currently I am Principal of a Mainstream urban school in NZ’s northern most city, Whangarei. The school is 90% Maori and has an Immersion unit, Technology centre, a Special Needs unit as well as attached units for students who have hearing and sight difficulties. The school will be opening an onsite Kindergarten in 2014. Perhaps its claim to fame though is that it is home to a Regional Television Station and as such the students have access to experts to assist them with the producing, filming and editing of their own TV show, Pukeko Echo, which is aired weekly to the Whangarei district.
Manaia View School is recognised for investing in strengths, opportunities and potential for Maori.
This is my second term on the Te Akatea Executive and I am again looking forward to the mahi ahead.
I have held a number of key roles linked to educational leadership. These include the NZ Educational Institute Principals Council of which I will again represent Te Akatea, Principal Advocate as well as representing Maori Educators on National Working Parties.
As an identified NZ Principal Mentor, attached to the University of Auckland, I provide professional advice and guidance to First Time Principals with a focus on leadership effectiveness.
Since 2006 I have been an executive member of Aka Tokerau Maori Principals Association, which was formed to develop strong connections and networks amongst Maori Principals in Northland. This Association has become a vital voice for Maori Education in a mainstream environment in Northland.
I have a commitment to the improvement of the outcomes for Maori learners. I advocate that this requires developing the capabilities and capacities of Principals and Teachers who are Maori, as well as improving the cultural competencies of Non Maori Educators.
